View notebooks shared with you

You and your teammates can share notebooks to create visibility around design work, collaborate on context, gather actionable feedback, and track decisions.

Depending on the sharing settings of the notebook, you may or may not need an Abstract account to view it. No worries — if needed, you can create an account while requesting access to the shared notebook. You’ll follow different steps to view a notebook depending on whether you have an account, and whether you want to view a public or private notebook.

Choose the topic that's right for you:

  • You do have Abstract account and want to view a public project or notebook
  • You do have an Abstract account and want to view a private project or notebook
  • You do not have an Abstract account and want to view a project or notebook

View public projects and notebooks shared with you

If you already have an Abstract account and are part of your team’s organization, you can view all public projects. You also get notifications when someone requests your review of a notebook.

In the left side navigation, click Notebooks. Here you can view all notebooks to which you have access. Click the name of a notebook to view its contents. You can also view any shared notebooks that have been completed or archived.

If you are added as a reviewer to a notebook, you receive an in-app notification.

  1. Click on the notification icon top of the left navigation bar to view your notifications.
  2. Click on the notification in the dropdown to navigate to the shared notebook.

Request access to a private project or notebook shared with you

If you already have an Abstract account and are part of your team’s organization, you can view all public projects. However, if you want to view any private projects or notebooks, you need to request access.

While public projects and notebooks are available to anyone in the organization, an admin must approve your access to private projects and notebooks. If you are an admin, follow the steps below to approve access.

To request access to a private notebook:

  1. Paste the notebook URL into the navigation bar of your preferred browser.
  2. If you are not signed in to Abstract, enter your username or email address and click Continue to sign in with your credentials. If you are signed in, skip to step 3.
  3. Click Request Access to request permission from the project admin.
  4. When the project admin approves your request, you receive a notification at the email address associated with your Abstract account. Click View Project in the email to view the project and its notebooks.

Request access to a shared notebook

If you have received a link to an Abstract notebook from one of your teammates but you do not have an Abstract account, you have two options: ask for a public link or create an account and request access to view the notebook.

If you choose to request a public link, ask the notebook admin to follow the instructions in Change the sharing settings.

Admins can disable public share links for their organizations. If pubic share links have been disabled for the organization whose notebooks you want to view, you must create an account and request access.

If you use a public link, you can leave a comment or review, but you can’t edit the notebook contents. Alternatively, when you choose to create an account, you have full access to edit the notebook, or leave a comment or review.

While public projects and notebooks are available to anyone in the organization, an admin must approve your access to private projects and notebooks. If you are an admin, follow the step before to approve access.

  1. Paste the notebook URL into the navigation bar of your preferred browser.
  2. Below the Continue button, click the request access link to request an invitation.
Sign in screen with Request Access link highlighted.
  3. Complete the form and click Request access to send the request to the project admin.
  4. After the project admin approves your request, you receive an email invitation to join the Abstract organization as a guest viewer. Click the Accept Invitation button in the email.
  5. Fill in the form fields and click Create account to create your guest viewer account in Abstract.

After creating an account, you can view, post comments, and leave reviews on all notebooks in the project.

Approve access as an admin

When someone requests access to a notebook in a private project, you receive an email that someone has requested access. Click the Approve Access button in the email.
