Create custom templates

Abstract Notebooks allows you to use templates to jumpstart your process rather than starting from scratch. Admins in your organization can create custom templates tailored to your team’s process and documentation style to save you time when starting a new initiative.

Create and save a custom template

Administrators in your organization can create custom templates in the organization settings. Once you create and save a template, anyone in your organization can use the template to create notebooks.

You must save the template in order to make it available to your organization.

To create a new template:

  1. Open the Abstract app.
  2. In the left side pane, click on the organization name.
  3. From the dropdown, select Organization Settings.
  4. In the Templates tab, click Get started.
    NOTE: If you already have custom templates, click Create new template.
  5. Add and format the custom content you want to create your template.
    NOTE: Custom templates can include formatted text and images. They do not support content from Sketch or Figma.
  6. Click Save template when you are finished. When you save the template, it is published to your organization and everyone has access to use it in their notebooks.

Edit or delete a custom template

Any admin can edit or delete custom templates in your organization.

If more than one admin attempts to edit the same template at the same time, the last person to save their changes will overwrite the previous save.

To edit a template:

  1. Open the Abstract app.
  2. In the left side pane, click on the organization name.
  3. From the dropdown, select Organization Settings.
  4. In the Templates tab, click the pencil icon next to the name of the template you want to edit.
  5. Make the changes you want in the template.
  6. Click Save template.

Editing a template does not affect any notebooks that were previously created using that template. Saving the edits only changes how the template will appear when it is used in the future.

To delete a template:

  1. Open the Abstract app.
  2. In the left side pane, click on the organization name.
  3. From the dropdown, select Organization Settings.
  4. In the Templates tab, click the trash icon next to the name of the template you want to delete.
  5. Click Remove in the confirmation modal to delete the template.

Deleting a template does not change or remove any notebooks that were previously created using that template. It only removes that template from your organization going forward.

Use a custom template

Once your admin has saved a custom template, any contributor in your organization can use the template to create a new notebook. Custom templates are applied in the same way as default templates

After you have created a notebook using a custom template, you can edit, add, and remove content as normal.
